The tennis icon Martina Navratilova has got married to her longtime gay partner Julia Lemigova in New York City.
The 58-year-old tennis player, who got married for the first time, said that growing up as a gay woman people just don't ever think about getting married, but about 10 years ago she thought "within 10 years gay marriage will be legal" and here they are 10 years later making it legal, E! Online reported.
The 42-year-old Russian-born model turned businesswoman, who was Miss USSR in 1990, said that she was so overwhelmed and completely surprised when Navratilova popped the question on camera during the U.S. Open, but she would not expect anything less from her.
Lemigova, who has two daughters, added that by proposing and marrying in such a public way, she thinks and hopes they'll give inspiration to families set up like theirs, that they too can be married legally one day.
While Lemigova admitted that she was a bit "overwhelmed," Navratilova called being married "just really odd.
