Mauritius President Rajkeswur Purryag has strongly advocated the use of Ayurveda to cope with and counter the hazards associated with modern-day living.

Purryag said that Ayurveda is not only curative, but also preventive in its application.

"Ayurvedic medicine is something that has to be promoted all over the world because it is not only curative, but is also preventive. Seeing today's lifestyle, it is very necessary to adopt Ayurveda", Purryag told media here ahead of a visit to the Global Ayurveda Festival.

The five- day event will be inaugurated on February 20. About 40,000 delegates from all over the world are expected to attend it.

Ayurveda, literally meaning the 'science of life', has over the years gained popularity, as the world haunted by toxic effects of modern drugs, is fast on the lookout for alternative systems of treatment.

In India, Ayurveda evolved as a system of medicine around 600 B.C.
