Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati vouched for reservation for people from upper castes who were poor and unemployed.

Addressing a rally in Chandigarh on Sunday, Mayawati said people from upper castes should get reservation in educational institutions.

"Apart from Muslims and other religious minorities, poor and unemployed among the upper castes should also get reservation in educational institutions and government jobs. I have written a letter demanding the same to the government a number of times. However, they haven't taken any decision regarding that until now," said Mayawati.

Former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati said that poverty and unemployment was still rampant among the backward sections of the country.

"The social and economic condition of these backward people hasn't seen any significant transformation so far. Even today, poverty and unemployment is rampant on a large scale among such sections," said Mayawati during her election rally.
