The showdown between US boxing star Floyd Mayweather Jr and Mexican Canelo Alvarez, which Mayweather won, was reportedly the richest fight ever as it was a box-office smash at the arena and on television.

American cable network Showtime revealed that at least 2.2 million homes bought the pay-per-view for the bout, second only to the 2.44 million homes in Mayweather's 2007 fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

According to CBS News, the fight will generate nearly 150 million dollars in revenue in TV sales alone with the highest pay-per-view boxing price at an average of more than 70 dollars.

The report mentioned that the gate for the fight was a little more than 20 million dollars, which eclipsed the 18.4 million dollars earned from 17,000 tickets for the Mayweather-De La Hoya fight, adding that a total of 16,146 seats were sold for the event, held at MGM Grand arena, at an average price of almost 1240 dollars per ticket.

According to a promoter, total revenues would reach 200 million dollars upon final count, which will surpass the 165 million dollars generated by the Mayweather-De La Hoya fight.

The report further said that Mayweather, who outclassed Alvarez to remain unbeaten in 45 fights, earned a guaranteed 41.5 million dollars from the fight, while Alvarez, who was defeated for the first time in 44 professional fights, was guaranteed five million dollars.
