World number one golfer Rory McIlroy has been listed for the next week's US PGA Championship, suggesting that the star golfer would be in line to defend the year's final major at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

Tournament organisers released tee times for the opening round on Twitter, with McIlroy grouped along with US Open and Masters champion Jordan Spieth and British Open winner Zach Johnson, Sport24 reported.

The Northern Irishman suffered a 'total rupture' of ligaments in his left ankle last month, which ruled him out of the Scottish Open and the defence of his Open Championship at St Andrews.

McIlroy, the four-time major champion, later re-tweeted the PGA of America's tweet. He also posted a picture that appeared to show the inside of a private plane along with various emojis depicting a US flag, a thumbs-up symbol and a golf flag.

Earlier, McIlroy had fuelled speculation surrounding his return to action by posting a video which showed him driving a ball on the range.
