Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, Englishman Justin Rose and world number three Henrik Stenson have suffered second-round exits at the WGC World Match Play in Arizona on Thursday.
2012 runner-up McIlroy won three holes on the trot to lead by one, but a six at the first extra hole; the 19th, handed victory to English, while Rose, who was the last English player left in the event, lost at the 20th hole to veteran Ernie Els.
According to the BBC, Swede Stenson, the current world number three, lost 4 and 3 to 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen.
The report mentioned that McIlroy had played some sparkling iron shots in the closing stages against English, who comprehensively beat Lee Westwood 5 and 3 on day one.
This year's event is missing three of the world's top four players in Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson.
Players are divided into four groups, with the group winners in the knockout format going through to contest the semi-finals on Sunday, the report added.
