Mercedes bosses have queued up to apologise to Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton after a strategic error cost him victory at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton was leading when he was called in for fresh tyres during a late safety car period, leaving him in third place at the end.

Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said that they got the maths wrong, adding that it was the responsibility of the team, and he was apologising on behalf of the team, the BBC has reported.

He said that it was a misjudgement in the heat of the moment and they couldn't do anything else other than to apologise.

However, this mistake of Mercedes allowed Nico Rosberg to complete a straight hat-trick of wins at the famous street circuit, the fourth man to do so after Graham Hill, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

The German also cut Hamilton's world championship lead by 10 points, because the British driver ended third behind Sebastian Vettel.

A clearly upset Hamilton refused to blame the team for the error.
