After seeking the resignation of then-national security adviser Michael Flynn, President Donald Trump defended his fired aide saying he was "wonderful man".

Flynn, who had deep connections with Trump throughout the 2016 campaign, was asked to resign after it became public that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence on conversations he had before moving into the White House, regarding sanctions on Russia with Sergey Kislyak, the Kremlin's man in Washington, reports CNN.

"Gen. Flynn is a wonderful man. I think he has been treated very, very unfairly by the media, as I call it, the fake media in many cases. And I think it is really a sad thing that he was treated so badly," he said.

However, Trump refused to acknowledge that he was the person who had asked Flynn to resign, nor explain why he would have asked a "wonderful man" to leave the White House in the first place.

Trump further stated that "illegally leaked" classified documents meant to harm Flynn were part of a "criminal act."

"I think it is very, very unfair what has happened to Gen. Flynn. The way he was treated and the documents and papers that were illegally, I stress that, illegally leaked," he said.

Trump concluded saying that the leaks were meant to "cover up for a terrible loss that the Democrats had under Hillary Clinton.
