The police have arrested eight militants who allegedly shot dead 10 people besides leaving 26 others injured outside a mosque in Pakistan's southwestern provincial capital of Quetta on Friday morning, local media and officials said.

Superintendent of Police Saryaab Bashir said that soon after the attack, police, security forces and personnel of intelligence agencies sealed the whole area and launched a search operation.

"It was rapid action by law enforcement agencies and security forces, we got information about a hideout on the outskirts, the forces raided it and finally arrested the culprits after the fire exchange," said Bashir.

Police also found a uniform of security forces from the militants' hideout and said they were investigating on this line but did not reveal whether the militants belong to any of terrorist organization or not.

Bashir said that the assailants wanted to target former provincial minister Ali Madad Jattak who remained unhurt in the attack.

The police chief said that around eight terrorists opened fire at people from two different sides and they ran away after the attack while Jattak claimed that around 16 people took part in the attack.
