A new study suggests that drivers supervising L-platers on NSW roads would hardly pass a driving test.

Just three percent of parents and supervisor drivers managed to pass an online road rules test of 16 questions similar to the Driver Knowledge Test wannabe drivers are required to pass in order to get their learners' licence, the Courier Mail reported.

That's 18 out of 624 participants, who have either taught a learner in the past five years, or intend to in the next five years.

NRMA president Wendy Machin said parents or supervisors planning to teach learner drivers should participate in the keys2drive program, a free government program conducted by a qualified driving instructor.
