President Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the death of former union minister and Planning Commission deputy chairman Mohan Dharia.

In a condolence message to his wife, Shashikala, Mukherjee said that Dharia was a distinguished parliamentarian and an able administrator who had served the nation in different spheres.

"His service to the nation as a union minister and as the deputy chairman of planning commission will always be remembered. He also made a valuable contribution as a dedicated environmentalist and as a champion of farmers' rights," he said.

"In his death, the nation has lost an eminent public figure who made immense contribution for the greater good of our country," he added.

Dharia, 89, passed away in a private hospital in Pune on Monday morning.

He was admitted to Pune Hospital in Sadashivpeth for treatment of a kidney ailment last Saturday, but failed to recover.
