Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to entertain the Kerala Government's proposal to conduct environmental impact assessment (EIA) study for the construction of a new Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala's Idukki district.

Jayalalithaa urged the Prime Minister to instruct the Union Environment, Forests and Climate Change Ministry and its agencies to desist from entertaining and considering the proposal of Kerala.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, in her letter to Prime Minister Modi, pointed out that a case in this matter is pending before the Supreme Court.

The apex court had in its order issued in May last year held that the existing Mullaperiyar dam is structurally, hydrologically and seismically safe and had negated the offer of the Kerala Government for the construction of a new dam.

A review petition filed by Kerala was dismissed subsequently in December 2014.

The Tamil Nadu Government has filed an interlocutory application in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Kerala from conducting an EIA study and also reserved its right to file a contempt plea.

The Supreme Court will hear the matter next month.
