Defending US Open champion Andy Murray has reportedly made his entry into the third round at New York by overcoming Argentina's Leonardo Mayer in four sets.

According to BBC, the third-seeded Scot dropped his first set of the tournament as he withstood some heavy hitting from Mayer, although he came through 7-5 6-1 3-6 6-1 in two hours and 41 minutes.

The report further said that the Wimbledon champion will face Germany's Florian Mayer, world no. 47, in the last 32 on Sunday.

Stating that he did not feel well served in the match against Mayer as he did against his first round opponent Michael Llodra, Murray said that it may be because of the different court and different conditions throughout the day, although he added that he finished the match well and played well when he needed to, which is a good sign for him.

According to Murray, he wants to keep improving as the tournament goes on, adding that he hoped to get better given that a player does not want to play his best right at the beginning of the tournament.

The report further said that the British No.1 has had some tough matches on Louis Armstrong Stadium, which he himself admitted, although he said that he is happy to play on any court as it does not make a lot of difference to him, adding that the match had a good atmosphere from almost the first point till the end.
