The 28-year-old Scottish player claimed a 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 triumph over German teenager in a thrilling opening round.
Murray will now lock horns with Australian Sam Groth, who is a holder of the game's fastest serve, in the second round.
In the women's single event, Venus Williams, elder sister of world number one Serena Williams, crashed out of the Australian Open after suffering a 4-6, 2-6 defeat at the hands of Johanna Konta of Australia.
