British number one Andy Murray advanced to the US Open quarterfinals and claimed his first top-10 win in over a year with straight sets victory over French tennis ace Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Murray beat Tsonga 7-5, 7-5, 6-4 in humid conditions in New York, and will next face world number one Novak Djokovic in the last eight. The Briton has extended his run of Grand Slam quarterfinals that stretches back to Flushing Meadows.

The Briton, seeded eighth, finally claimed a much-needed victory against one of the game's leading names in Tsonga, the ninth seed who had been enjoying a fine summer, The BBC reported.

Murray said that it was a good match for the most part, and added that he feels like he is playing well. He said that he is going to have to play extremely well to win the event or even just to get through the next match.

The Scot said that one never knows what can happen in a couple of days, adding that a week ago he did not feel great at all.

Murray's previous top-10 win came against Djokovic in the 2013 Wimbledon final, since when he has failed to get past the semifinals of any tournament.

Meanwhile, Tsonga said that the only explanation for what happened in the match is that his opponent was better than him on the court.

The Frenchman added that he missed a few things, but at the end they have to play each point and Murray was just better than him in the three sets.
