A girl with a rare genetic condition has finally spoken her first words thanks to a diet that involves eating four tubs of cream cheese a week.

Fields Taylor, suffers from GLUT1 deficiency, a rare and incurable genetic disorder, which affects her ability to speak, the Mirror reported.

The 3-year-old said her first word "Mum" after eating a kilo of Philadelphia every week for three months.

The disease leaves the brain starved of energy because the body cannot transport enough glucose.

Medical experts, who took more than a year to diagnose Taylor, put her on a high-fat ketogenic diet, which forces the brain to use this as its energy source rather than glucose.

Her delighted mum Stevie, 34, from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, told the publication that the first time she heard her daughter saying 'Mum' was just wonderful.

Stevie and her husband David first noticed something was wrong with their daughter when she was 15 weeks old and took her to see the GP when all of a sudden she had a seizure in the waiting room.

Fields was diagnosed with epilepsy but it was another 12 months before medics realised she was suffering from GLUT1 disorder.

Her ketogenic diet is high in fat and very low in carbohydrates, and she must also drink 50ml of a special oil four times a day to boost her fat intake.
