Nadal honoured as Madrid 'adopted son' for his 'award-laden' career

The Spanish capital of Madrid has reportedly announced tennis' world No.1 Rafael Nadal as its 'adopted son' in honour of his impressive career.

Declaring someone an adopted son or daughter is the highest award, which Madrid city hall can award.

According to Sport24, Nadal said that it was a very special day for him, adding that he believes in respect for his opponents, humility, discipline, hard work and enthusiasm, adding that he uses those values in his personal life as well.

Nadal, who began playing tennis at age four coached by his uncle Toni Nadal, has been champion in 13 Grand Slam tournaments and has won the French Open eight times, Wimbledon twice, the US Open twice and one Australian Open.

Previous recipients of the distinction include Spain's King Juan Carlos and Peruvian author and Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, the report added.
