The 14-times Grand Slam champion overcame his South African opponent 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 to book a last eight duel against French Open champion Stan Wawrinka.
The Spaniard appeared to be on the verge of exit before a forehand winner allowed him to save match point at 5-6 down in the second set tie-break, Sport24 reported.
Meanwhile, Roger Federer crashed out of the tournament after suffering a 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 7-6 (7/5) defeat against John Isner.
