Home Minister of Nagaland, Y Patton, has called on educational institutions to be centres of development not only for academic performance, but also as places where students can achieve good moral character.
He was addressing the 69th annual day celebrations of S D Jain Higher Secondary School, one of the oldest schools in the state.
The very essence of education, according to him, is the 'concentration of mind and not mere collection of fact' and opined that the basic objective of education should be centred on formation of good moral character besides broadening the intellect for one to develop a positive view of life.
"A model school should be a mirror of the child's personality with education constituting their inner beauty," Patton said.
The minister also praised the S D Jain Higher Secondary School for producing 82 state-rank holders, including state toppers in the High School Leaving Certification examinations. That is besides a four state-level toppers in the Higher Secondary School Leaving Examinations since the establishment of the institution in 1947.
He further announced plans to give Rs.50, 000 to each of the 10 toppers from the school in the coming HSLC or HSSLC exams.

The minister also gave away awards to meritorious students of the school.
The main highlights of the program were display of dances and special numbers.
