Nagaland's Sumi tribe celebrates Ahuna Festival

Dressed in their traditional attire, folk artists of the Sumi Tribe enthralled people while celebrating the "Ahuna Festival" in Dimapur.

Besides the traditional dance and songs, the major attraction during the fest was a demonstration to cook freshly harvested rice in bamboo.

The event was organized by Western Sumi Youth Front with the main objective of reviving traditional practices of the tribe.

"Ahuna is a post harvest festival. During this season we harvest a variety of crops and it is a festival of joy for the completion of a successful harvest season. It is a very significant festival," said Nagaland Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang.

During the festival, the Sumis also demonstrated the different kinds of indigenous games.

A team from "faith in action", a Taekwondo Group also showed the martial arts skills.

It was a great opportunity for visitors to sample the rich culture and traditions of the Sumis.

Nagaland has about 40 tribes with their own unique culture and traditions.

Some of the popular festivals in the region are Moatsu, Hornbill, Sekrenyi and Tsungrem Mong.

These festivals not only help preserve tribal traditions, but help the young generation to understand their history.
