National Encryption Policy mirrors government's failure, says cyber expert

Cyber expert Virag Gupta on Tuesday alleged that the government's draft National Encryption Policy reflects the failure of the government and is meddling with the private matters of people.

"This draft policy reflects the failure of the government and the industry. Government failure is that they are still insisting for the technology which is now outdated," Gupta told ANI.

"They are fulfilling their obligation which are neither required by the law nor can be enforced. For normal information neither it can be directed as per law. It is the violation of right to privacy," Gupta added.

Gupta further said that "I think that government has failed to understand the reach of the technology and they have also failed to issue the business aspect of the technology where in all these companies are to be regulated in a manner without interfering the freedom of the normal users of the country."

The government will have access to all encrypted information, including personal emails, messages or even data stored on a private business server, according to the draft of a new encryption policy.

The Draft National Encryption Policy wants users to store all encrypted communication for at least 90 days and make it available to security agencies, if required, in text form. It also wants everyone to hand over their encryption keys to the government.
