Taking suo moto cognisance of Salman Khan's comment that he felt like a "raped woman" while playing a wrestler in his upcoming film 'Sultan', National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Lalitha Kumaramangalam on Tuesday sought a public apology from the Bollywood actor and asked for an explanation.

Dubbing Salman's comment as 'irresponsible and careless', Kumaramangalam told ANI that the actor would be summoned if his explanation is unsatisfactory.

"This is very irresponsible of Salman to give such a careless statement. The commission has taken a suo moto cognisance and has sent a letter to him, asking him that what drove him to make such a statement as his comments smell of patriarchal high headedness that prevails in our country and we are highly offended by it," Kumaramangalam said.

"Meanwhile, we have asked for an apology and sought an explanation. In our letter, we have also mentioned that if we don't feel satisfied with his answer then we will summon him before us," she added.

Continuing his tirade against the actor, Kumaramangalam further said Salman does not know what rape is.

"It is not equivalent to picking 120 kgs. His comment is unfortunate and highly condemnable. I believe Salman's fan should negatively react to this statement of his, especially the females' fans," he added.

In a recent interview, the actor reportedly made a shocking statement that has landed him in a soup.

During his interaction with an entertainment website, Salman was asked about his experience of playing a wrestler in his upcoming film Sultan and he said that he felt like a "raped woman".

"I'd have to lift the same 120-kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles. And likewise, get thrown that many times on the ground. This act is not repeated that many times in the real fights in the ring. When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn't walk straight. I would eat and then, head right back to training. That couldn't stop," he said.
