'Nepal's pain is our pain', says PM Modi

Expressing his support for Nepal, which has been ravaged by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that India shared the neighbouring country's pain.

"Today's earthquake has made us all very sad. Reports are still coming on the extent of the damage. Nepal's pain is our pain," Prime Minister Modi said at the 50th Jnanpeeth Award ceremony here.

"I spoke to the Prime Minister and President of Nepal. Have assured them that our entire nation is with them in this hour of need," he added.

In the wake of the earthquake that struck Nepal today, a 24-hour 'Control Room' has been set up in South Block in the Ministry of External Affairs. The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Nepal has risen to 758, with 467 people killed in the capital Kathmandu.

The impact of the earthquake was felt in almost all northern states in India particularly in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim and West Bengal.
