Nepal to hold local polls after two decades

Kathmandu [Nepal], Feb. 21 (ANI): Nepal is set to hold local polls after a gap of two decades.

A cabinet meeting held on Monday announced May 12 as the date for the polls.

As the government announced the poll date, the Madhesi Morcha came forward with their protest schedule.

The Morcha which has been pressing for amendment of the Constitution promulgated in 2015, has called for a strike across the Terai region on Wednesday.

The election commission has been preparing for the polls and is expected to approach the government to deploy the army whenever they are held.

The date for the single-phase election was proposed by the election commission after consultation with the government.

The election commission is set to buy ballot boxes for the election, as at present, it has 45,000 small size ballot boxes and 15,000 large ones. It needs 50,000 additional ballot boxes.
