The Ministry of External Affairs has said that it expects all Nepalese leaders to work together in the final stage of the peace process and in the drawing up a new Constitution that honours past agreements and the mandate of the elections.

"It is our expectation that all Nepalese leaders will work together in the final stage of the peace process, in drawing up a Constitution that honours past agreements and understandings as well as the mandate of the CA elections," MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said on Tuesday.

As the January 22 deadline to frame a new Constitution approaches, Nepal is witnessing a political crisis which led to scuffles inside the country's Parliament. The opposition also led a nation-wide strike yesterday, and the prospects of meeting the deadline to frame a new Constitution appear bleak.

Nepal's first constituent assembly was elected in 2008 and since then the parties have been trying to reach a consensus on the framing of a new Constitution.
