Prominent Taliban leader Mullah Omar has been reportedly left out of the proposed peace talks between the Taliban and the government by new Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

The UN's Afghanistan ambassador, Dr. Zahir Tanin, said that Ghani invited the Taliban, but Mullah Omar was not invited because he was on the terrorism watch list, New York Post reported.

Ghani, during his inaugural speech on Monday, called for peace talks with the Taliban and another militant group, Hezb-e-Islami, after 13 years of war.

Ghani assured the militant groups that the government was willing to find a solution to all their problems.

However, the Taliban have rejected the Afghan president's peace proposal.

Tanin said that though Taliban had renounced the peace offer, the government needed to work with its neighbours in the region to see whether the Taliban would be ready to join them at some point.
