New chess world champion Magnus Carlsen has shattered the typical stereotype of a 'nerdy' chess player and has broken every pre-conceived notions of the game with his posts and photographs on the social media after beating India's Viswanathan Anand.
Indian grandmaster and defending champion Anand lost the title to Carlsen, after the 10th game of the World Chess Championship match ended in a draw on Friday.
According to Mashable, the 22-year-old Norwegian has broken every pre-conceived notion about the world's nerdiest sport with his youth, good looks, his building himself into a 'marketing juggernaut' and his posts on Facebook and Twitter.
The social media posts contain images, which show him jet-skiing, playing beach volleyball shirtless, hanging upside down from training rods and jumping from five metres into a vast lake at a resort, along with the message that he is 'preparing for his games'.
Carlsen earned about 1.2 million dollars last year, and more than half of that came from sponsorship deals, with the report saying that a Seattle tech company called Parallels flew him in from Norway to 'impress its customers at a conference' by playing simultaneous chess matches against groups of up to 30 people.
