A nonprofit organization set up an oil extraction and refinery plant in Manipur, creating employment opportunities and adding to the income of many families in the province.

Founded by 'Smart Society' with an aim to change the face of the industrially underdeveloped region, the oil plant has changed the fate of many an unemployed youth.

The Managing Director of the society, Narengbam Samarjit Singh, emphasised on the need for better industrial policies in Manipur.

"You know, since we realised from the door of our understanding and for the last five years of our experience, in the field of changing the society into smart society, our agriculture in state of Manipur is not lack of resources but it lacks policies to ensure that the food is produced where it is needed and in a manner that it sustains the livelihood of the people living in the state," said Singh.

This is the first successful completion of an oil mill plant and refiner project in all the seven northeastern states.

The plant can process upto five tonnes of mustard oil and plans to extract oil from other seeds including sunflower, peanut and castor.

Around 2000 people have benefited from the set up of this mill, which is developing a self-sustainable work culture in the state by using 500 hectors of barren paddy fields.

"Now let us begin a new chapter of revolution to produce more doers than more beneficiaries," Singh added.

People are hopeful that the unit will bring economic boom in the region, and will help educated youths and farmers and the suppressed women.

Imphal district has a good agricultural growth of products like rice, which makes it a suitable location for oil extraction.
