The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report on 30th June this year that an explosion in a pipeline of Gas Authority of India (GAIL) killed 15 people and injured 12 near Nagaram village in East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh on the 28th June.
It has issued notices to the Secretary, Union Ministry of Oil and Natural Gas Resources, CMD, Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and District Magistrate, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh calling for reports in the matter within two weeks.
According to the media report, the people in the village had complained to the GAIL authorities about the gas leakage but no action was taken to rectify the same.
The Commission has observed that the contents of media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of persons who died and those who were injured in the incident.
