Forces have retaken the Nigerian town of Damasak a day after Niger and Chad launched a joint operation to take on militant group, Boko Haram, in north-east Nigeria.

The Niger border town had been under the terror group's control since November when it had stepped up attacks in the region, reported the BBC.

Military sources said that about 10 Chadian soldiers and 200 militants were killed during the operation.

The military offensive to push back Boko Haram was launched after the group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS).

The declaration prompted Niger, Chad and Cameroon to send troops to take on Boko Haram.
