Nirbhaya Fund: Delhi buses to now have CCTV cameras

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led Delhi government will soon install CCTV cameras in over six thoudand buses in the national capital using the Nirbhaya Fund.

The approval for the same has been given by the Delhi Cabinet.

In a bid to fulfill their elections promise, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's cabinet decided to install CCTV cameras in buses.

State Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot informed that the CCTV camera will be installed in 6350 buses of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS).

There will be three cameras in each bus which will be installed from the Nirbhaya Fund, Gahlot said adding that tender will be issued soon for this.

According to the information, the estimated cost of this project is 140 crores.

Government sources claimed that the current financial year is aimed at fulfilling this plan.

At present, 200 DTC buses have CCTV cameras as a pilot project. In view of the women's security during the assembly elections, AAP government promised to install CCTV cameras in buses.

Following the 2012 brutal gang rape, Nirbhaya Fund was announced by the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in the 2013 budget speech, with Government contribution of Rs. 1000 crores for empowerment, safety and security of women and girl children.

Nirbhaya (fearless) was the pseudonym given to the Delhi gang rape victim to hide her actual identity.
