No problems from Indian side on movement of trucks, says customs officer at Indo-Nepal border

Customs Officer at Indo-Nepal border, Kamlesh Kumar, on Tuesday said that there are no problems from Indian side of the border to the movement of trucks between two countries, adding that Madhesi protestors are blocking the traffic from Nepal side of the border.

"The gates from our side are open, but Madhesi's are sitting on the Nepal side of the border and blocking the traffic. The trade by means of train is underway, its only the movement of trucks that has remained stalled since September 24," Kumar told ANI here.

"So far due to the agitation, India might have incurred losses of up to Rs. 10-12 crores. India does not look at trade with Nepal from revenue point of view, we look at it from trade facilitation point of view. We tell Nepalese officials that we have no problems in letting the trucks pass, but they should clear the protestors on their side," he added.

Hundreds of trucks have been held up on the India-Nepal border due to protests by Madhesi people over promulgation of new Constitution in Nepal. Nepal is facing acute shortage of essential commodities due to the stalling of vehicular movement at the border.

The Madhesi parties today held talks with the Nepal Government to end the impasse and find a resolution to the conflict.

New demarcation of boundary for the southern plains, more rights and representation for the Indian-origin Madhesi people are the major demands of the agitating groups. (ANI)
