Maintaining that there is no proof to establish sedition charges against arrested Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday asserted that their stand has been vindicated post the investigation launched on another student in this regard.
"Reports talking about the authorities investigating into the fact that Kanhaiya did not make any anti-national slogans prove that we have been right from the start. Kanhaiya is a communist himself and a patriot, he is against violence. Those who have slapped charges of sedition against him have no proof that he did something wrong. As a matter of fact, there can't be any proof as he has done nothing wrong," CPI (M) politburo member Brinda Karat told ANI.
Talking about the 'pro-Afzal Guru' chants that were raised at the Jadavpur University to protest the alleged police atrocities inside the JNU campus, she added that the CPI (M) did not support the slogans but added that branding this act as 'sedition' was uncalled for.
"To say that this constitutes sedition is wrong and you can't advocate a political position. There is not a shred of evidence that Kanhaiya raised a single anti-national slogan," Karat said.
She also lashed out at Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi for defending the culprits, who were behind the violence outside the Patiala House court where scribes and students were openly thrashed.
"The Delhi Police Commissioner has no right to stay at his post. He has defended the culprits, who attacked people inside the court premises and who said that they will shoot people if they have to. Such people are being defended by the police, it's is the biggest tragedy for Delhi that such a Police Commissioner exists," Karat added.

Meanwhile, claiming to have identified the students chanting 'anti-national' slogans at the JNU, the Delhi Police on Wednesday launched inter-state raids to get hold of the culprits.
According to reports, the police claim to have identified all the students seen in the footage of the event against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
In a report submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs on its crackdown on a group of protesting JNU students on February 9, the Delhi Police yesterday said that Democratic Students Union (DSU) activists led by Umar Khalid raised anti-national slogans on that day.
However, the report said that Kanhaiya Kumar didn't raise anti-national slogans but was just standing with DSU activists. Umar Khalid has been absconding since then.
