A column in an Australian newspaper has strongly criticized the country's part adoption of a performance-based pay system, adding that talent was so thin that young, modest players are still guaranteed lavish contracts well before they have earned them.

According to The Age, the Argus report now looks like an expensive navel-gazing exercise with some of its key recommendations in mothballs, and the sacking of a good coach and the captain no longer involved in selection was not auguring well for the Australian team.

The report said that even if Australia had played eight tests in India instead of four, the technical and off-field problems were so entrenched that the team might have lost all of them.

Now that the Argus report was almost unraveled, Australia would have a long road back to improve their team, the report added.
