North-East floods: Home Minister sanctions Rs. 674 crores for flood relief

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh along with Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and Union Minister for sports Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday conduct an aerial survey of flood affected areas in Assam and Meghalaya.

The Home Minister also held a review meeting with the officials of the state administration in Guwahati. Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister of Meghalaya Mukul Sangma, Union Minister for sports Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju were also present during the meeting.

After the meeting, Rajnath Singh said, "The central government will give maximum support and assistance the flood affected states. A total of Rs. 674 crores has either been released or being sanctioned for the relief work. Rs. 286 crores has been sanctioned for Assam, for Meghalaya Rs.123 crores has been released and for Arunachal Pradesh Rs.70crores has been released and further 20 crore has been sanctioned."

"According to the information received 40 people have died in Assam, 55 have died in Meghalaya and in 56 in Arunachal Pradesh. I would like to pay tribute to all those who have died," Singh added.

The Minister appealed to all the political parties to leave the political differences aside and work together to help those affected due to floods.

Torrential rains for the last couple of days in northeastern parts of the country have resulted in flooding in several districts of Assam and Meghalaya.
