North Korea is planning to close down its nuclear test site in May, the South Korean President's office has said.

President Moon Jae-in's chief press secretary Yoon Young-chan said during a live broadcast that the closure of the Punggye-ri site would be done in public and foreign experts from South Korea and the United States would be invited to watch, reported Yonhap News agency.

"Some say that we are terminating facilities that are not functioning, but you will see that they are in good condition," Yoon quoted North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as saying.

Yoon further said that South Korean leader Moon Jae In and Kim would publicly announce as and when the nuclear test site was dismantled.

On April 21, Kim announced the suspension of the country's nuclear and missile tests and shut down a nuclear test site in the northern area.
