New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has insisted that he is not superstitious even though he refused to let go of his old bat while batting during the second Test against India at Wellington, where he became the first New Zealander to score a triple century.

McCullum's personal no-eating rule until the end of an innings led him to survive for nearly 13 hours at the crease solely on sports drinks and protein shakes, brought out to him at 20-minute intervals during the Test, which ended in a draw and awarded the hosts a 1-0 series win.

According to Stuff.co.nz, although there were regular requests for towels and fresh batting gloves, McCullum refused to call for a new bat or grip and simply used a tape to repair a hole on the grip of his bat handle, although he insisted that he was not being superstitious and just wanted to play with the bat as it was serving him well.

While McCullum put in the hard yards on the field, twelfth man Ish Sodhi and emergency fielder Peter Younghusband were working hard behind the scenes to make sure he was regularly supplied with gels, water, protein shakes and Gatorade, the report added.
