United States President Barack Obama has urged Germans to give the U.S. "the benefit of the doubt" on the work of National Security Agency (NSA) that is believed to have tapped German Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone in 2013.

According to TechCrunch, Obama said that he wants Germany to recognize the fact the U.S. has always tried to promote civil liberties ad that the U.S. and Germany have been consistent partners since last 70 years.

In 2013, the news about NSA tapping Merkel's phone has caused a sensation following which Merkel had said that "friends do not spy on each other".

However, now things are calmer than before as Merkel discussed the need for collaboration with the U.S.

Merkel also praised the effectiveness of U.S. intelligence saying that it has provided Germany with important information which is significant for their security.
