U.S. President Barack Obama is deeply concerned by the Egyptian Armed Forces' decision to remove President Mohamed Morsi from power.
Following the move on Wednesday, Obama hopes to see the military quickly return authority to a democratic government.
Obama, in a statement released nearly four hours after the Egyptian military announced it had removed Morsi from his post, said the U.S. is monitoring the very fluid situation in Egypt, and they believe that ultimately the future of Egypt can only be determined by people in Egypt.
According to Politico, Obama continued that they are deeply concerned by the decision of the Egyptian Armed Forces to remove Morsi and suspend the Egyptian constitution.
He then called on the Egyptian military to responsibly return full authority back to a democratically elected civilian government as soon as possible through an inclusive and transparent process, and to avoid any arbitrary arrests of President Morsi and his supporters.
Obama also said he is also directed appropriate departments and agencies to review their aid to Egypt.
