United States President Barack Obama has reportedly demanded another review of the nation's Syria policy after realizing that the Islamic State (IS) may not be crushed without a political transition in Syria and the removal of President Bashar al-Assad, senior US officials and diplomats said.

The decision indicates that the previous strategy of trying to beat the terror group in Iraq first and then taking them on in Syria, without focusing on the removal of Assad, was a miscalculation, reported the CNN.

The White House has already convened four meetings in the past week of the President's national security team. One of the meetings was chaired by Obama while others were attended by principals like the secretary of state.

A senior official said that the meetings focused on fitting the US' Syria strategy into the IS strategy.
