A US court has sentenced Suleiman Abu Ghaith, Osama Bin Laden's son-in-law and al-Qaeda spokesman, to life in prison on charges of terrorism.

According to the BBC, Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, 48, is the highest-ranking al-Qaeda figure to face trial on US soil since the 9/11 attacks.

Ghaith, who was captured in Jordan last year and brought to the US, was found guilty of conspiracy to kill Americans and aiding al-Qaeda in March.

US District Judge Lewis Kaplan said that it was his assessment that Ghaith was committed to doing everything he could to carry out al Qaeda's agenda to kill Americans.

Ghani, who was seen alongside Bin Laden in a video that was released a day after the 9/11 attacks, maintained that his role was purely a religious one intended to motivate all Muslims to stand up against their oppressors.

He testified that Bin Laden had asked him to be al-Qaeda's spokesman on the night of the 9/11 attacks, the report said.
