Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, the gunman who stormed Canada's government complex on Wednesday killing a soldier, had recently applied for a passport as he wanted to travel to Syria, said his mother.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner Bob Paulson said that Michael Zehaf-Bibeau had been in Ottawa since October 2, reported Fox News.

Paulson said that Zehaf-Bibeau, a recent Muslim convert whose father was from Libya, may have lashed out in frustration over delays in obtaining a passport.

The two shootings in Ottawa left lawmakers barricaded inside offices and parts of the city for hours on Wednesday as police looked for suspects.

Bibeau, who was born in 1982, converted to Islam and had a long history of drug use before he converted, two sources said.
