The government has cancelled the licences of over 2,000 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) across the country, which would prevent them from receiving foreign funds.
According to reports, licences of 964 NGOs were cancelled in Maharashtra, followed by 740 in Uttar Pradesh and 614 in Karnataka. The licences of 88 NGOs were also cancelled in Tamil Nadu.
The decision to cancel the registration of these entities under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act was taken by the Union Home Ministry after the NGOs allegedly failed to submit their annual returns and in view of other anomalies.
