Police in Gujarat destroyed more than one lakh seized liquor bottles as the sale and consumption of liquor is banned in the state.

Gujarat, which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state, has a sumptuary law in force that proscribes the manufacture, storage, sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

The destruction took place in Vadodara city.

"In the north zone of the state there are a total of ten police stations where 539 cases were registered. There are a total of 123,292 bottles and their price is rupees 1.13 crore. Today, in the presence of all the officers, the bottles are being destroyed," said police officer in-charge of the destruction, A.G. Chaudhary.

Huge road rollers and bull dozers were seen moving over the seized liquor bottles.
