Pak in familiar denial mode following US concerns on nuke proliferation

Pakistan has said it is committed to the objectives of disarmament and non-proliferation.

Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry said as a nuclear weapons state, Pakistan's policy was characterised by restraint and responsibility.

The response from the FO came after a story in was published in the Washington Post wherein the United States had expressed concerns over Pakistan's nuclear progarmme.

He said that Pakistan has established extensive physical protection measures, robust command and control institutions under the chairmanship of the prime minister.

He added that comprehensive and effective export controls regulatory regimes in the country ensure safety and security of nuclear installations and materials.

According to the Daily Times, he added that Pakistan follow best international practices and standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He said Pakistan was also fully engaged with the international community on nuclear safety and security issues.

The spokesman added that Pakistan's nuclear deterrence capability was aimed at maintaining regional stability in South Asia, the report added.
