Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy undertakes a study tour on LED lamps

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy, which is under the chairmanship of Dr. Kirit Somaiya, undertook a study tour to understand the manufacturing of LED lamps.

The delegation, comprising of ten MPs visited the NTL Lemnis facility in NOIDA to see for themselves the process of lamp manufacturing at a state of the art facility.

The MPs included six MPs from Lok Sabha and four from Rajya Sabha.

The Lok Sabha MP's included Dr. Kirit Somaiya(BJP), Sh. Harish Dwivedi(BJP), Sh. Bhagat Singh Koshyari(BJP), Dr. Arun Kumar(RLSP), Smt. Krishna Raj(BJP), and Sh. Devendra Singh Bhole(BJP). The MPs from Rajya Sabha on the study tour included Sh. Oscar Fernandes(INC), Sh. S. Muthukaruppan(AIDMK), Sh. Ananda Bhaskar Rapolu(INC), and Smt. Viplove Thankur(INC). Shri. N.K.Pandey, Director, Committee on Energy, Lok Sabha Secretariat also visited the facility.

NTL Lemnis is a joint venture company between NTL Electronics, India's largest lighting electronics company, and Lemnis Lighting BV of Netherlands, the global LED lighting innovator. NTL Lemnis designs, manufactures and sells energy efficient LED lighting solutions for Indian as well as the global audience. Lemnis Lighting is credited with creating the first LED lamp in the world and NTL manufactured the first LED lamp in the country for Lemnis Lighting in 2009.

At the NTL facility, which has end to end manufacturing of LED lighting products, the committee was taken through the complete manufacturing lifecycle and process. The highlight was on showcasing the checks and measures that are put in place to ensure consistently high quality for the end products. These are at par with the best available standards globally and something that other Indian manufacturing facilities should follow so that Indian consumers can have the best products, produced locally.

NTL has one of the largest LED manufacturing facilities in India with an installed capacity of two million lamps per month. NTL employs around 4000 people in seven manufacturing facilities at Noida, Dehradun and Roorkee. NTL is an ISO 9000certified facility and the lamps have BIS, CE, LM-79 and UL certifications.

"Energy conservation is an important aspect of our deliberations and LEDs are the most energy efficient lighting source in the world today. Our study tour focuses on understanding the manufacturing process for LED lamps and where we stand so far as indigenous manufacturing is concerned," said Dr. Kirit Somaiya, Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy.

Dr. Somaiya observed the need to strengthen the Indian Industry so that the Government's LED initiative can be adopted by the private sector and transition of Indian consumers from Incandescent bulbs/ CFLs to LED Bulbs can become more broad-based and good quality LED Bulbs can be made available to Indian retail consumers at a very competitive price.

Dr.Somaiya further stressed on need to focus on quality to protect Indian customers from sub-standard foreign supplies of cheap LED products. The Parliamentary Committee also deliberated on policy initiatives to help Indian Industry become global leaders in this fast-growing sector.
