Newly sworn-in Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha here on Monday.

"I consider myself lucky and grateful to the MLA's, party and most importantly people of Uttar Pradesh. I feel proud after filing nomination for Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. This state has given some great leaders," Parrikar said after filing his nomination papers.

"I assure that with the best of my abilities not only will I serve the nation but also ensure that whatever my skills and abilities are will be put to use," he added.

Parrikar, who is presently not the member of any house in the Parliament, filed his papers before Principal Secretary of Vidhan Sabha, Pradeep Dubey.

He was inducted into Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Union Cabinet on Sunday after resigning as the Chief Minister of Goa.

The elections for 10 Rajya Sabha seats from UP are slated for November 20, with today being the last day for filing nominations.
