The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has supported the decision of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to uphold the life ban on leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.
According to the Daily Times, the PCB called on Kaneria, who was banned for luring his Essex teammate Mervyn Westfield to concede an agreed number of runs in return for money in a 2009 spot-fixing scandal, to reflect on his conduct and start a process of rehabilitation.
The ECB, which banned Kaneria for life in June last year, had rejected a second appeal by the player for reducing his ban on Tuesday, following which Kaneria accused the PCB of not helping him.
However, PCB rejected his claims, saying that Kaneria was duly represented in the proceedings through a legal counsel of his choice, who had raised no question with regards to jurisdiction, composition, procedure or fairness of the appeal panel.
Stating that Kaneria would remain banned from all cricket in Pakistan as per International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, the PCB further said that he is suspended for life from any involvement in the playing, organisation or administration of cricket in any form or manner under the jurisdiction of the board.
The PCB also said that it hoped that Kaneria would reflect on his past conduct and would initiate efforts towards his redemption and rehabilitation.
Expressing his disgust at England's decision to uphold his life ban for spot-fixing, Kaneria had claimed that he had been a victim of injustice and malafide intentions from the ECB, saying that there is still no evidence against him that he indulged in any spot fixing or introduced anyone to any player from Essex county.
The ban effectively prevents Kaneria from playing any form of the game anywhere in the world, as boards under the ICC have to enforce bans imposed by any country, the report added.
