Three celebrity chefs will reportedly serve a variety of intricate, expensive dishes featuring local favours at the upcoming US Open in a bid to showcase their talent to international tennis fans.
According to the New York Daily News, culinary superstars David Burke, Tony Mantuano and 'Iron Chef' Masaharu Morimoto have prepared a variety of salads, steaks and sushi at the restaurants they are helming for the duration of the 15-day tournament, which will start from Monday in New York's Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
Unveiling a gluten-free dish to be served at the Open's Champions Bar and Grill, Burke, who owns a string of award-winning steakhouses, said that the dish, which is topped with cheese and sandwiched between two portobello mushrooms, should be a winning dish as it is light and healthy.
Meanwhile, Morimoto came up with an intricate shikai maki roll, which has layers of tuna and egg in a diamond-shaped delicacy with curved cucumber wedges, and joked that the dish was also called as 'stained-glass door'.
Italian chef Mantuano said that dishes have to be simplified to quickly and deliciously feed the hordes of hungry fans.
However, a local food blogger said that the fare did not represent the ethnic eats that have come to put Queens on the culinary map, although he believes the cuisine will please the numerous tennis fans who turn out for the Open.
The report further said that fans at the Open this year can choose from a number of delicacies at a new oyster bar, three new Heineken House bars and a fresh salad and sandwich market, adding that about 225,000 hamburgers and hot dogs, 7 1/2 tons of seafood and 85,000 pounds of poultry are expected to be served at the event.
