United States President Donald Trump has defended Vice President Mike Pence's action for leaving the 49ers-Colts NFL game in Indianapolis on Sunday, after about a dozen San Francisco players kneeled during the playing of the national anthem.

"The trip by @VP Pence was long planned. He is receiving great praise for leaving game after the players showed such disrespect for country!" President Trump tweeted.

The President's tweet comes after questions were raised about Pence using government travel to go to the game in Indianapolis on Sunday.

President Trump has repeatedly attacked NFL players who kneel during the national anthem by terming it as "not acceptable".

President Trump had tweeted more than dozen times related to NFL and national anthem controversy.

Earlier, the President had praised Usain Bolt by pinning the video on Twitter in which the Olympic champion paused during an interview for the U.S. national anthem.

"Even Usain Bolt from Jamaica, one of the greatest runners and athletes of all time, showed RESPECT for our National Anthem!" Trump had tweeted.
